exhibition-maas-movers-1978-by-chris-davies.jpgThe exhibition “Black Dance in Britain”: 1930’s – 1990’s Moments formed the centre piece of the Dance Dialogues calendar of events. The venue  was located in Unit BG11 Ground Floor The Mall Broadmead (through the main Galleries/Mall entrance opposite Tescos between Gap & Faith Shoe shop).  Over 2000  people visited the exhibition which highlighted the enormous contribution made to theatrical dance by black practitioners in Britain, and the influence African Peoples’ Dance has had on mainstream modern dance forms such as break dance and hip hop. The photographs are a national treasure and a great educational resource.

Imayla brought the exhibition to Bristol in the wake of its visits to the London Theatre Museum and Stratford Circus in London, The Drum Arts Centre in Birmingham and The Peepul Centre in Leicester.  The archive has been collated by the Association of Dance of the African Diaspora (ADAD) and spans seven decades of the art, power and influence of African Peoples’ Dance.  Do contact ADAD if you would like more information about it, to host it at your venue etc.
